I was talking with maclou about what Johnny's make a year after she showed me a post on 2ch about an assumed estimate yearly salary of the top highest paid in the company:
Johnny - 9 mil
Mary - 8.9 mil
Julie - 6.5 mil
Nakai Masahiro (SMAP) - 5.2 mil
Kimutaku (SMAP) - 2.9 mil
Tsuyoshi (SMAP) - 2.8 mil
Kouichi (Kinki) - 1.6 mil
Tsuyoshi (Kinki) - 1.3 mil
Inagaki Goro (SMAP) - 1.3 mil
Nagase (TOKIO) - 1.2 mil
Katori Shingo (SMAP) - 900k
Leader (TOKIO) - 800k
Taichi (TOKIO) - 800k
Mabo (TOKIO) - 700k
Higashiyama (Shounentai) - 650k*
Tackey - 680K
Okada (V6) - 760k
Matchy - 530k**
Inohara (V6) - 400k
Miyake Ken (V6) - 400K
* Higashiyama is also an employee of Johnny's & Associties
** Matchy owns an formula racing team and is an actual racer
Anyway, while looking at the list it made me think back to when I remember hearing them (K8) say they make relatively the same amount of money... Granted this was roughly around two years ago. Now, Yoko likes to cry broke a lot (and fly around the world at the same time too
Looking at that list, its pretty much granted that Nakai would top the list because of all the shows he hosts on top of endorsements and dramas, not to mention his activities in SMAP. If you also notice all of SMAP makes the list. As the list regresses, you begin to notice a trend - More endorsements and shows = More money. For some reason Tackey out performs Okada, but granted Tackey has a lot of endorsements... and I have a feeling he's probably actually working for J&A, cause I don't see where else he can be making nearly 700k a year.
Now to get to the point of this post: I looked at K8's activities as a whole and then at their individual activities. As a group they have two shows and one endorsement (Nissin UFO)... Individually (08 activities):
Hina - Three Shows (Momoko no Oh! on KTV, Ariehen Sekai on TV Tokyo/TV Osaka, and the one on TV Asahi), 1 Drama (Arigatou Okan), Butai
Yoko - 1 Drama (YnmKnM), Solo con
Yasu - Ariehen Sekai, 1 Drama (Yasuken ep 5), Butai
Subaru - 1 Drama (Arigatou Okan), Solo con, Butai
Ohkura - 2 Dramas (Yasuken/Hissatsu), Solo con
Maru - Ariehen Sekai
Ryo - Two endorsements (Lawson/Ross K Jeans), 2 Dramas (Last Friends/Ryuusei no Kizuna), NEWS Activities
So to include that on top of their activities as a group, I roughly assumed this list of highest paid:
- Ryo (90k - 150k)
- Hina (90k - 100k)
- Ohkura (90k - 100k)
- Yoko (85k - 90k)
- Subaru (80k - 90k)
- Yasu (70k - 80k)
- Maru (70k - 75k)
Of course they could BE making more, but considering there's ARASHI, V6 and KAT-TUN, I do not expect them as a group to be making more than 200k since Ken Miyake himself makes 400k. And really, to me, 200k is a stretch.
Now it was mentioned that the reason that Maru, Yasu, and Hina did the CMs for Musekinin Hero was because they were the cheapest and most avaliable so...
The Japanese entertainment industry is not like the American system and this is clearly obvious by the list above. Artists are not paid by royalties but instead are considered "employees" to the agency and are actually on a pay roll (They all get paid a check at the end of the month, unlike American artists who get a cash advance). They get salaries, so even if Musekinin Hero sold 380k (which times that by like $11, gets you around a 4.2 mil profit), that isn't reflected in their salaries as you would expect it to. A prime example of this would be Beyonce making nearly 22 million dollars in 2007 and Ayumi Hamasaki only making 3 million in that same year. Both artists write their own lyrics and are involved in the production of their music as well as their music being sold internationally (Ayu's music is sold in europe and in asia).
So even if Carrie Underwood made 7.1 million dollars in 2007, Kanjani8 wouldn't even come close to that amount and they toured the entire country for nearly an entire year while hosting two television shows and not to mention solo member activity.
Now I ask you - What is your opinion on this?
